Genetic testing for hereditary diseases – do you want to know?

More than 3,000 genes have been linked to known diseases and researchers are routinely discovering new genes to predict genetic disorders. Doctors use the test results to clarify a diagnosis and specialists refer unaffected family members for predictive genetic testing to see if they were born with a mutant gene. Now that you can find out if you inherited a gene from your parent, do you want to know? Here’s a story I wrote for Alberta Health Services’ Apple magazine about genetic testing and two women who were tested for two hereditary diseases.
